LOK SABHA PASSES RESOLUTION FOR PEACE IN MANIPUR AMID ETHNIC VIOLENCE.
The Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, has passed a resolution appealing for peace and harmony in Manipur, a northeastern state that has witnessed ethnic violence for over three months. The resolution was suggested by Home Minister Amit Shah and read out by Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, after Shah concluded his speech on the no-confidence motion moved by the opposition against the government. The resolution was supported by the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and approved by the opposition parties, who had earlier staged a walk-out in protest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the Manipur situation. The conflict in Manipur erupted in early May 2023, when two dominant ethnic groups, the Kukis and the Nagas, clashed over land and political rights.
